This Old House
a group exhibition curated by Alum Glenna Jennings
Saturday, July 23rd, 2011, 3-11PM
2989 N. Victoria Dr., Alpine, San Diego, California
Artist / Curator Glenna Jennings proudly presents “This Old House," a multi-media art and performance event featuring an exciting roster of emerging and established artists from San Diego, Tijuana, Los Angeles and beyond.
The artists wrangle with issues ranging from loss, decay and nostalgia to hazardous waste control and The Mormon Battalion in an attempt to exorcise Jennings’ childhood home of the demons long haunting it in dreams. The multiple chosen and site-specific works serve the transformative purpose of readying a place replete with history, memory and sentiment for its launch into the foreboding real-estate market.
In tones that range from the irreverent to the sincerely nostalgic, Jennings and several of the artists face a question challenging various artists, anthropologists and sanitation workers to their core: "How do you integrate the artifacts of our commodity culture into places/sites of public relevance?" (OR) "What do you do with old, unwanted junk from the 70s?"
The responses will dazzle and surprise! So please come smoke Glenna's grandma’s cigarettes! Read her mother’s Penthouse magazines! Check out her dad’s apothecaries! Visit a room housing both a giant rock and the history of the Entire World! Then, take Trish Stone's wagon tour, which will place you precariously against the backdrop of this mini-site and other regional, national and global histories.
A rummage sale curated by Jennings and artist Joe Yorty will take place Saturday, July 23rd from 3pm to 6pm, followed by a public reception until 11pm that will include sounds by Tristan Shone, Jason Begin, Kelly Eginton and others.
Participating artists include:
Isabel Avila, Jason Begin, Jenn Berger, Fabian Cereijido, Beth Chucker, Tracy Cornish, Michael Dahan, Brian Dick, Monica Duncan, Kelly Eginton, Farrah Emami, Deanna Erdmann, Lorena Gomez, Kate Hoffman, Ian James, David Kim, Heather Gwen Martin, Meghann McCrory, Gretchen Mercedes, Jesse Mockrin, Omar Pimienta, Andy Ralph, Jesus Renteria, Jimena Sarno, Robert Steinberger, Charchi Stinson, Trish Stone, Katherine Sweetman, Michael Trigilio, Allison Wiese, Joe Yorty
